Process of making whiskey
Malting
Barley
contains starch and that starch is converted into soluble sugar which is used
in making whiskey. And for this barley must undergo a process which is known as
germination, this is also known as malting. Barley is soaked in warm water for
almost 2-3 days and then spread on a floor to maintain its temperature.
Mashing
Malt
is added to warm water to begin the extraction of the soluble sugar. During
this process the sugar in the malt gets dissolved. This process ensures to
extract the maximum amount of sugar from the malt.
Fermentation
This
is the main process of making whiskey in this process the wort is passed
through a cool tank which is known as washback, it is traditionally made up of
wood. The process of fermentation normally takes 48 hours to run its natural
course. The liquor at this stage is low in alcohol.
Distillation
The
wash is mainly distilled in a copper pot which helps in converting the alcohol
into vapor. And separates alcohol from water and eliminates the yeast. After
distilled process alcohol becomes weak.
